Police Arrest Suspect Who Fled, Fatally Struck Pedestrian

After fatally striking a 16-year-old female pedestrian, the suspect jumped out of the moving vehicle.

A suspect has been charged following a fatal crash in Minneapolis.

On Friday night at 9:55 p.m., Minneapolis police witnessed a vehicle traveling at high speeds and driving recklessly in the area of Emerson Avenue North and 36th Ave North.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, fatally striking a 16-year-old female pedestrian.

The suspect continued driving for a short distance before jumping out of the moving vehicle and fleeing on foot, according to a news release.

The suspect's vehicle, which was still in motion at the time, continued moving without the driver and crashed into multiple parked vehicles. Officers found a handgun in the suspect's vehicle.

Officers arrested the suspect a block away as he was attempting to carjack a vehicle occupied by a family. The suspect was found to have two felony warrants for his arrest.

Officers administered first aid to the female victim until North Memorial Ambulance arrived. The victim was transported to North Memorial Hospital where she later died of her injuries.

The Hennepin County medical examiner will release the identity of the victim as well as the cause and manner of death.

The suspect was also transported to North Memorial Hospital due to his injuries from the crash.

The Minneapolis Traffic Unit responded to the scene to conduct a crash reconstruction and a blood sample was taken from the suspect to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The suspect is currently at North Memorial Medical Center and will be booked into the Hennepin County Jail upon his release.
