MINNEAPOLIS, MN — State and local officials are learning more about the financial toll of the violent protests that broke out over the death of George Floyd.

An estimate released by Hennepin County shows it will cost $10 million to rebuild the Third Police Precinct in Minneapolis, according to the Star Tribune.

At the direction of Mayor Jacob Frey, Minneapolis police abandoned the building on the night of May 28 as protests surrounded it, starting fires and vandalizing the precinct.

The precinct is located about two miles from the intersection where Floyd was arrested. It was one of the many building damages during the week of civil unrest that followed his death.

Federal authorities have rejected Gov. Tim Walz's request for aid in rebuilding Minneapolis.

Earlier this month, Walz requested financial support from FEMA and asked President Donald Trump to "declare a major disaster for the State of Minnesota because of extensive fire damage to public infrastructure caused by civil unrest."

More than 10,000 public safety officials contributed to the effort to restore peace and safety, including the first full mobilization of the Minnesota National Guard since World War II. However, nearly 1,500 Twin Cities businesses were damaged by vandalism, thefts, and fire, according to a news release.

Current estimates of the damage exceed $500,000,000.
