Reported Rapes In Twin Cities Aren't Being Investigated: Study

Too many cases of sexual violence in Minnesota aren't fully investigated, if at all, according to a new report.

TWIN CITIES, MN — Hundreds of cases of rape and sexual assault in the Twin Cities and across Minnesota aren't fully investigated. Some aren't investigated at all.

That's according to a bombshell report in the Star Tribune involving analysis of 1,000 cases of reported sexual violence.

One of the unsolved cases involves Brooke Morath, 24, who was left bleeding, with burning eyes, after she was assaulted near her apartment in Dinkytown.

“It’s a terrifying, humiliating and defeating feeling,” Morath, now a Mayo Clinic researcher, told the Star Tribune. “It shouldn’t be this hard for a victim.”

The study found that in 1,000 cases of sexual violence cases in Minnesota:

  • 74 percent were never sent to prosecutors (no arrests or convictions)
  • Only 12 percent of cases resulted in a charge
  • Only 7 percent of the cases resulted in a conviction
