St. Paul's Sunisa Lee Wins Silver In Team Gymnastics

St. Paul native Sunisa Lee and her teammates won silver after their leader, Simone Biles, withdrew from the team competition.

St. Paul native Sunisa Lee and her teammates — Grace McCallum and Jordan Chiles — won the silver Olympic medal in the team competition in Tokyo after their leader, Simone Biles, withdrew from the event Tuesday.

"Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue," USA Gymnastics tweeted. "She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions."

Biles, 24, dropped out after performing in the vault competition, a video clip shared by NBC showed.

"I’m SO proud of these girls right here," Biles, 24, later posted on Instagram.

"You girls are incredibly brave & talented! I’ll forever be inspired by your determination to not give up and to fight through adversity! They stepped up when I couldn’t. thanks for being there for me and having my back! forever love y’all."

Russian athletes won the gold medal in the team competition. Great Britain won the silver medal.
