St. Thomas Student Died From Asthma: Report

The 19-year-old student was a graduate of Andover High School.

TWIN CITIES, MN — The University of St. Thomas student who passed away last month died as a result of asthma, according to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner. Katherine "Katie" Ann Mullen, 19, was found unresponsive in her dorm room on the morning of Sunday, Oct. 21.

The medical examiner’s office said Mullen's asthma caused respiratory distress and sudden death, the Pioneer Press reported.

Mullen, a dean's list student and "cherished" friend, worked in Academic Counseling and Support, the university said.

The Andover High School graduate "brought tremendous joy and laughter to her family and to the lives of those who were fortunate enough to have known and loved her," her obituary read.

"She adored children and hoped to pursue a career related to their care and fostering of their growth and education."

Mullen died less than two weeks before another St. Thomas student passed away. First-year student Joia Mae Simpson died after she fell from the 10th floor of The Bridges apartments in Dinkytown.
