Star Tribune Ed. Board Endorses Jacob Frey For Minneapolis Mayor

The Star Tribune editorial board said Jacob Frey "refused to be intimidated" by protesters during the city's debate over public safety.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has won the endorsement of Minnesota's largest newspaper in his bid for reelection. Frey is one of 17 candidates vying for the job.

On Sunday, the Star Tribune's editorial board — which operates separately and independently from its newsroom — wrote that Frey is the best candidate to lead Minneapolis.

The "defining moment in Frey's first term" came during a protest on June 6, just days after George Floyd was killed, the board wrote.

"He met protesters who had gathered at his home to demand that he defund the Police Department. To his enduring credit, Frey refused to be intimidated."

"Minneapolis needs a mayor who will make public safety and police reform coequal priorities," the board added.
