We Need Driver's Licenses For All: Hennepin Co. Sheriff

The sheriff is supporting a bill that allows individuals to obtain a driver's license without providing proof of legal status in the U.S.

MINNEAPOLIS — Hennepin County Sheriff David Hutchinson testified in front of the House Judiciary Committee Monday in favor of House File 1500, which makes modifications related to driver’s licenses and Minnesota identification cards. This bill would allow individuals to obtain a driver’s license or Minnesota identification card without providing proof of legal status in the United States.

Hutchinson testified that this bill arms law enforcement with a more reliable way to identify people who are pulled over. He says that law enforcement in states that do not have driver’s licenses for all have less recourse against those who are not safe drivers, as those drivers have less identification and it is more challenging to record their traffic infractions.

"As the Sheriff of Hennepin County, my primary responsibility is to ensure the public safety of our residents," said Hutchinson.

"I know from my experience as a police officer that our roads are safest when the people driving cars are trained, tested, licensed, and insured. This bill helps to ensure that the people driving on our roads meet those requirements."
