What's Open, Closed New Year's Day 2019 In Minneapolis

Many workers will start the new year with a day off. Here's what to expect in Minnesota.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis City government offices, including Minneapolis 311, are closed Tuesday, Jan. 1, in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday. City offices will resume regular business hours Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Garbage and recycling – There’s no city of Minneapolis garbage and recycling pickup Tuesday, Jan 1. Households’ garbage and recycling pickups scheduled for Jan. 1 through Jan. 4 will occur one day later (Jan. 2 through Jan. 5) than their normal schedules. In addition, the Solid Waste & Recycling customer service office and the Public Works South Transfer Station are closed Tuesday, Jan. 1.

Metered parking – The city's parking meters are not enforced Jan. 1. All other parking restrictions in the city remain in effect and subject to enforcement, including Park Board meters along Minneapolis parkways, University of Minnesota parking meters and those of private organizations that operate their own meters. Always read the information posted on the meter to be certain.

Permits, development services – The Minneapolis Development Review Customer Service Center (the permit office) is closed Tuesday, Jan. 1.

311 – Minneapolis 311 will not take calls Tuesday, Jan. 1.

911 and emergency services – The holiday does not affect 911 or Minneapolis police and fire emergency services.

Liquor stores in Minnesota may remain open on New Year's Day, but many will choose to close. Be sure to call ahead.

Shopping and other services:

  • Post office: Closed
  • Federal offices: Closed
  • Hennepin County: Offices are closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
  • Banks: Closed
  • Gas stations: Most will remain open
  • Minneapolis schools: Winter break lasts from Dec. 25 to Jan. 5.
