3 Minnesota Commutes Named Among America's 'Burnout Belts'

A new national ranking says three Minnesota commuter routes stand out for a reason many workers know well.

MINNESOTA — Three Minnesota commute routes landed on a new national list of so-called "burnout belts," a ranking meant to capture the suburban commutes drivers most associate with stress, lost personal time, and daily exhaustion.

A Mission for Michael surveyed 3,002 drivers about the commutes most linked to burnout, factoring in traffic, delays and the total time spent getting to and from work.

Three Minnesota pairings made the top 100: Stillwater to St. Paul at No. 60, Pine Island to Rochester at No. 99, and Lakeville to Minneapolis at No. 100.

The idea behind the list is that for many commuters, the workday does not really begin at the office or end when they log off. Instead, long drives can quietly eat away at mornings, evenings and time at home.

"Burnout is often framed as something that happens at work, but for many people, it starts and ends with the commute," Anand Meta, executive director at AMFM, said in the release.

Nationally, the top-ranked burnout belts were Palmdale to Los Angeles, White Plains to New York City, and Tracy to San Francisco.
