BAYTOWN TOWNSHIP, MN — An 11-year-old boy was in critical condition Wednesday after an SUV struck him while he was riding an electric scooter in Baytown Township, authorities said.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office said its Emergency Communications and Response Center received a 911 call at about 8:16 a.m. Wednesday reporting that a juvenile on an electric scooter had been hit by a vehicle at the intersection of 40th Street North and Paradise Avenue North.
First responders began CPR as soon as they arrived, and the boy was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, according to the sheriff's office.
A 57-year-old Baytown Township woman was driving east on 40th Street in a 2018 Audi Q5 when she struck the boy, who was heading north on Paradise Avenue North, Sheriff's Sgt. Mike Benson told the Pioneer Press.
The boy, who also lives in Baytown Township, was wearing a helmet. "If he had not been wearing a helmet, it would be a very different story," Benson told the newspaper.
Authorities initially said the boy was 15 before correcting his age to 11.
The Minnesota State Patrol is assisting with crash reconstruction, and the sheriff's office and State Patrol are investigating. Authorities have not said what led to the crash, and no charges have been announced.
The sheriff's office provides law enforcement for Baytown Township, which does not have its own police department.
