Give local this year

Want to have an immediate impact on the economy? Give to a local charity this year.

Books for children in Africa, rainforests in Brazil, women farmers in Uganda - these are all wonderful causes that deserve support. But with the US economy in a very deep rut and so many of our own neighbors struggling, it makes sense to keep your charitable dollars at home this year and support local programs.

Here are just a few of the amazing organizations that help people right here in Stillwater for you to consider:

Community Thread and Valley Outreach - These two programs are working together this year to make certain every needy family who wants help gets it. Families may register for assistance at either organization, and your donations of new toys, gifts, winter clothing and food will be delivered to the families in time for Christmas morning.

Hope House - Located in a quiet Stillwater neighborhood, Hope House provides assisted care for people living with HIV/AIDS who are no longer able to live independently. This is a small nonprofit that has a deep and meaningful impact on its residents, their partners, family and friends, and where your donation will also have a deep and meaningful impact this holiday season.

Youth Advantage - Many children in our school district want to participate in sports and music, but not all families can afford the fees and equipment. That's where Youth Advantage comes in, providing kids with equipment, instruments and scholarships. So you know that old violin in your attic or the dusty skates in your garage? How about passing them on to Youth Advantage - you may be helping the next Hilary Hahn or Phil Housley get their start.

ArtReach St. Croix - Go ahead - admit it. You'd rather buy something from a charity than give a straight donation. No problem! Shop at the ArtReach St. Croix Holiday Gift Gallery where you'll find handmade ornaments, jewelry, mittens, and paintings, and support the St. Croix Valley's community arts leader at the same time.

Do you have a favorite local charity? Post a comment with their web address and why their program inspires you to give. Happy holiday giving!
