In Search of "Slavic Soul"

Stillwater artist Paul Randall talks about his return from his journey to a Serbian "Art Colony" and how he has found the meaning of "Slavic Soul."

On the morning of September 7th, 2011, I am home from a journey which has touched my life forever. In May of 2011, I traveled to Serbia to meet Facebook friends living there. I went in search of Slavic art and "The Slavic Soul." During that trip I was invited to return and attend "Art Colony Gramzigrad" which is a 10 day art workshop hosting artists from Serbia and around the world.

So on August 16th I returned to this beautiful country for 20 days and have had an experience that I would like to share with you. The country is economically poor, when one arrives there this is noticable instantly. Roads are bad and buildings are empty or in need of repair, the graffiti of angry youth is everywhere.

Yet the country is very rich, it is the people of Serbia and the "Slavic Soul" binding them together that make this country beautiful, so very beautiful.

This morning as I sip my coffee and watch my beloved St. Croix River sunrise, there is a new part of me welling up within me, growing like the sun shining on this day. I feel it, I must share it, I have come to know the "Slavic Soul." And, it is my wish for the world that this friendship grows, and may be received by all those wanting to share it. One must look for it, it is there, and there . . . and it is beautiful . . . . .

Please join me in the comming weeks as I share photo's of my journey to this beautiful country. I want to share with you my experience of finding "The Slavic Soul."

"Slavic Soul" exists because a people have come together to defend themselves from countless invaders throughout history.

"Slavic Soul" is to give all of yourself to your brother and sister countrymen . . .

And, to in return expect the same of them.

To live together,

To drink together,

To sing, love and dance together,

To die together,

for each other . . . .
