Criminal Sentencing for Former Stillwater Mayor Delayed (Again)

The criminal sentencing for Stillwater's former mayor, who plead guilty to federal tax evasion in 2015, has been delayed a third time.

The criminal sentencing for Stillwater’s former mayor, Ken Harycki, has been delayed for the third time. It's a sentencing in the making since January 2015, when Harycki pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion.

Harycki's sentencing has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. May 16 at the federal courthouse in Minneapolis, the Stillwater Gazette reported. The delay is a result of a provision in Harycki’s guilty plea, which stated that he would assist in the prosecution of his co-conspirators, Thurlee and Roylee Belfrey.

The Star Tribune reported that the trial for the twin brothers, charged with health care fraud and tax evasion, is scheduled to begin April 24. Only after the Belfrey trial is complete will the former mayor face his sentencing from U.S. District Judge Ann Montgomery.

Among other crimes, Harycki admitted to creating shell companies for the Belfreys’ home health care business to hide money. In total, Harycki's crimes lead to a $2 million loss in taxes.

Most of Harycki's crimes took place while he was mayor of Stillwater, a position he was elected to in 2006. He resigned in 2014.
