Dozens of Marriage Amendment Signs Vandalized, Stolen in Stillwater

There are 41 days until Election 2012, and political signs are taking a beating in the Stillwater area.

Police have received dozens of reports that political signage has been stolen or vandalized in recent weeks. Here is a rundown of some of those reports taken by the Stillwater Police Department:

• A resident of the 1600 block of Morningside Drive on Sept. 25 reported the theft of a “Vote Yes” to the Marriage Amendment sign from his front yard. The resident reported it was the third incident in the last couple of weeks in which he has had issues with the same political signage.
• A resident of the 600 block of Olive Street West on Sept. 24 reported that his neighbor’s “Vote Yes” to the Marriage Amendment sign was damaged. The resident reported the incident because he was afraid his neighbors were going to blame him, as he is a “vote no kind of guy.” Police advised the resident to speak with his neighbor about the incident.
• A resident of the 100 block of Maryknoll Drive reported on Sept. 24 the theft of a “Vote No” to the Marriage Amendment sign.
• A resident of the 700 block of Pine Street West reported on Sept. 9 that a “Vote No” to the Marriage Amendment sign was stolen and replaced with a “Vote No” to Voter ID sign. Police told the resident theft and vandalism of political signage is a popular type of crime this time of year, and the department is getting reports of theft of “Vote Yes” and “Vote No” signs alike.
• A resident of the 900 block of Myrtle Street West reported on Aug. 30 the theft of a “Vote Yes” to the Marriage Amendment sign.
• A resident of the 800 block of Maple Street West reported on Sept. 4 that a “Vote Yes” to the Marriage Amendment sign has been stolen twice in recent weeks.
