Recap: Stillwater Beats White Bear Lake 28-19

Once again, extra points played a big part in role in the Ponies football team Friday night in a big 18-19 win over White Bear Lake.

The Ponies improved to 2-0 in the Suburban East Conference. The Bears dropped to 1-1 on the season.

The Ponies got on the board in the first half when quarterback Nate Ricci connected with wide receiver Joey Quinn for a touchdown pass. Danny Laudet added an extra point field goal to put the Ponies up 7-0.

White Bear Lake answered with a touhdown and extra point, sending the teams into halftime tied at 7-7.

The Bears took a 13-6 lead in the third quarter, when Stillwater running back Nick Anderson busted out for a 50-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 13-13. Laudet converted the extra point to put the Ponies up 14-13.

On the next possession, Ricci broke out for a 53-yard touchdown run, putting the Ponies up 20-13. Again, a succesful conversion by Laudet gave the Ponies a 21-13 lead.

The Bears scored another touchdown in the fourth quarter, but failed to convert a two-point conversion with just over 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter.

The Ponies offense, protecting a 21-13 lead, grinded out the last 5 minutes of the game with a couple of key runs by Anderson and a tough 2-yard run by Ricci to convert on fourth down.

The Ponies continued to pound the Bears with the run, which resulted in Anderson's second touchdown of the game.

The Ponies will head to St. Paul next week to play Cretin-Derham Hall (1-1) in another big Suburban East Conference game.

The Stillwater Ponies will host the White Bear Lake Bears Friday night for in the 2012 home opener at Pony Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

In one of the state’s oldest high school football rivalries, the Ponies hold a 52-38-3 edge in a matchup that dates back to 1915.

Not only is Friday’s game the home opener, but it’s also Parents Night.

The Ponnies will also be accepting donations for the “Tackle Cancer” game fundraiser for the Randy Shaver Cancer Research and Community Fund. See the Ponies video above.

If the Ponies hit their goal of raising $2,200 for cancer research, defensive back Jack Delahunt will give head coach Beau LaBore a haircut, according to the Stillwater Gazette. Donations will also be accepted at the entrance to Pony Stadium on Friday night.
