Game of the Week: Ponies Are Top Seed for Section 4AA Tennis Tournament

Stillwater will open tournament play at home Wednesday.

The Stillwater Ponies are the No. 1 seed for the Section 4AA tennis tournament, and need to win two matches to advance to state.

The Section 4AA tournament got under way Monday, with six teams in action in the section's somewhat complex tournament bracket.

There are 15 teams in the section, with the top four getting byes through to the quarterfinals. The other 11 teams basically play for the remaining four quarterfinal spots.

Stillwater, the top team from the Suburban East Conference and the tournament's No. 1 seed, begins tournament play Wednesday, when they'll take on the winner of Monday's match between No. 9 Woodbury and No. 8 St. Paul Harding.

Mahtomedi, from the Classic Suburban Conference, is the No. 2 seed.

Defending section champ Cretin-Derham Hall is the No. 3 seed, and Roseville Area is seeded fourth.

If the Ponies win Wednesday, they'll play again Friday, against either No. 4 Roseville, No. 5 Hill-Murray, No. 12 Tartan or No. 13 St. Paul Como Park.

The high seed hosts in the preliminary rounds, with the semifinals as well as next Monday's championship match to be played at Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
