Girls Basketball: Stillwater Starts Season 1-1

The Stillwater girls basketball team started the season with a 1-1 record.

The Stillwater girls basketball team are off and running.

The Ponies dropped their home opener 32-70 Thursday night to the Edina Hornets. But the ballers bounced back this weekend with a 47-44 win Saturday afternoon against Rochester Mayo.

The eighth-ranked Hornets proved too much for the Ponies in the season opener in a foul-filled game. Edina made 32 of 42 freethrow attempts, while the ponies only made it to the line 13 times, converting five from the stripe.

Against the Hornets: Anne Boldt led the Ponies in scoring with 8 points; Natalie Johnson scored 6; Erin Thiets and Savanna Handevidt chipped in with 4 points each; Kelcie Kempenich, Meg Pepera and Megan Strop each scored 3 points; and Sarah Mittelstadt scored 1 point.

The Ponies bounced back Saturday afternoon holding off the Rochester Mayo 47-44. Stillwater got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 21-8 lead against the Spartans, but Rochester battled closing the gap to 24-18 at halftime.

A physical, back-and-forth second half ended with the Ponies first win of the season.

Against the Spartans: Savanna Handevidt led the Ponies with 16 points; Kelcie Kempenich and Anne Boldt each scored 9 points; Sarah Mittelstadt scored 6 points; Natalie Johnson and Alex Hein each contributed 3 points and Erin Thiets scored 1 point.

The Ponies (1-1) will travel to Henry Sibley (1-3) Tuesday to take on the Warriors.
