STILLWATER, MN — A man is dead after opening fire at an apartment complex in Stillwater on Saturday, according to the city's police force. Several were injured, but only the gunman — who was shot by police — was killed.

On Saturday just before 2:30 p.m., Stillwater police responded to an apartment complex on the 2200 block of Orleans Street West on an unknown medical situation. The 911 caller was "screaming," the dispatch said.

Before officers arrived, a gunman shot "many" rounds inside and outside of the apartment complex, hurting several individuals, according to police. The man had several extended magazines he was using in a handgun, authorities said.

"This situation could have been much worse, if not for the response of our officers," Stillwater Police Chief Brian Mueller said in a news release.

This apartment complex is near several youth recreational facilities that were at capacity at that time, Mueller added. People in the area were alerted to an "active shooter" situation.

Because the incident ended with a police shooting, the chief asked the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to conduct an independent investigation.

"This is a large-scale crime scene and I appreciate everyone’s understanding as we navigate the investigation."

Other agencies that responded to the shooting include the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Oak Park Heights Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Bayport Police Department, Woodbury Public Safety Department, Stillwater Fire Department, and Lakeview EMS.
