i recently completed a study for downtown commercial real estate. the study was completed as a part of a larger effort to get the Historic downtown ready when the new Stillwater bridge is completed.
My portion of the task was to compile the overall sqaure footage of the downtown area to understand availabilites, and vacancies. At the end of the study a few things came to mind.
First and foremost, our downtown while having a great number of small businesses many of which are not seasonal, the sheer number is down. we have had a negative migration of office space from the downtown market.
in thinking about how to solve a couple of potential problems at once, i came up with the idea of "Live here, Work here". An effort to convince local residents that own or are decision makers at companies to locate an office in the Valley.
Think about the simplicity of Live Here Work here. 1- the commute, and the time saving and resource saving it would provide by not driving into either St Paul or Minneapolis. 2- By drawing small to medium sized companies to the Valley, the draw to our housing and local businesses, both daily and on weekends. 3- Stillwater is just a few great companies away from being a trendy and hip tech community. All we need are some owners to step up and present it to their employees.
i think if we can get our local government and business leaders to work together, we can get the momentum coming our way and start filling some vacancies in our buildings, more employees downtown everyday, and more traffic for our retailers everyday.
Let's work together and try to make something simple work for everyone.
