Mirror, Mirror on the wall….

What’s my energy? Do I stand tall?

A thought struck me the other day preparing for a Trumi Troopers Family Night. At Trumi Troopers (K-6 grade kids) we talk a lot of REP (Respect, Encourage, Persevere) in regards to physical activity. We want to teach kids to do their best and not give up on themselves. In our household we talk a lot about respecting our family members, taking care of belongings and respecting other people, but we have yet to really talk to our kids about actually respecting ourselves. Sure, we talk about making good decisions and being active but have not really had a talk about “when you look in the mirror - what do you see?” Do you respect yourself? Do you feel that you take care of your body? Do you take care of your teeth? Do you take the time to really listen to what your body may be telling you? Do you make fair decisions? Are you honest? Loyal? Do you nurture yourself by feeding your body nutrition food? Do you respect yourself enough to take good care of YOU?

Self-respect is something maybe we do need to discuss more often. In this technology driven, fast as light, quick thinking, world we DO need to talk about self respect. If we respect ourselves we have more respect for others, right? If we respect ourselves we make better decisions for ourselves, right? If we respect ourselves we create better boundaries (all kinds of boundaries, sleep, work, life, time management, texting, internet time, romantic, relationships, etc). If we respect ourselves we have better work ethics and become better citizens. So, I encourage you to have a talk with yourself about what kind of respect you are giving yourself. What kind of energy are you creating around you? Is it a positive, energetic, can do type of energy or are you struggling somewhere? If it’s positive stay on a roll…what else can you do for yourself to stay happily on top of things? If you see a negative energy in that reflection take a time out to regroup. Think about what kind of respect you are giving to yourself-are you getting enough sleep, outside time, exercise, good nutrition, quality time with friends or spouse? How can you help yourself? It starts with YOU - You need to feel good when you look in the mirror, not just at the outside, but the inside too! Take the time to respect yourself by doing something you need to do- yes, it’s tough and my take a little change but oh so very necessary!
