Sports Roundup: Ponies Ease Into Post-Labor Day Schedule

Only two sports on the docket for the first day of school.

Putting the Labor Day holiday in the rearview mirror, the Stillwater athletic program eased into the first full month of September with only two varsity sports on the docket on the first full day of school.

Girls Cross-Country

The Stillwater girls cross-country team opened its season with a run in the Irish Invitational in Rosemount, finishing second in the 12-team field, on Friday.

Abby Lange led the Ponies with a seventh-place finish among the 99 runners with a time of 12 minutes, 21.9 seconds. Cassie Pratt took 15th in 12:34.6, Larissa Colvin was 18th in 12:39.4, Maria Morley was 27th in 12:52.7 and Emma Wilhelm was 40th in 13:10.1 to round out those runners accounting for the team score.

Next up for Stillwater is an invitational appearance in Faribault at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Volleyball

The Stillwater volleyball team fell to 0-4 on the season with a three-game loss (17-25, 13-25, 21-25) to visiting Eagan on Tuesday. 

It was the third three-game sweep the Ponies have suffered in their four losses. All three have come against teams ranked in the top 10 in Class AAA.

As of the latest statistical update, Savannah Sprenger leads the team with 26 kills, Susan Evans tops the club with 58 assists and Maddie Brandon's 48 digs pace the squad.

Stillwater plays at Apple Valley at 7 p.m. Thursday, then returns to Apple Valley for a tournament on Saturday.

Girls Tennis

The Stillwater girls tennis team won its first Suburban East Conference match on Tuesday, shutting out Woodbury by a 7-0 score to improve to 1-1 in conference play. Individual statistics were not available.

Results from a schedule meet involving the Stillwater boys cross-country in Marshfield, Wis. last Saturday were not available.
