Sports Roundup: Ponies Soccer Squads Wrap Regular Season

Suburban East Conference champion boys likely to claim No. 1 seed for Section 4AA Tournament.

The regular season came to a close in a triumphant manner for the Stillwater boys and girls soccer teams as the Ponies both claimed victories in their final pre-playoff tuneups on Thursday.

Boys Soccer

Having already clinched the Suburban East Conference title with a 1-1 tie at Roseville on Tuesday, the Stillwater boys soccer boys soccer team took a victory lap with a 2-1 home win over White Bear Lake.

Statistics from the game were not made available. The win gave the Ponies a 13-2-1 overall record and a final 8-0-1 Suburban East mark as the squad now prepares for the Section 4AA Tournament.

Playoff seedings and matchups have not yet been announced. Stillwater is a virtual lock to earn the No. 1 seed and a first round bye, giving the Ponies a first-round home game on Oct. 13.

Girls Soccer

The Stillwater girls soccer team concluded a 9-5-2 regular season with a 2-1 defeat of visiting White Bear Lake, placing the Ponies fifth in the final Suburban East standings with a 5-3-1 conference mark.

Hannah Okerstrom and Leah Nitardy scored for Stillwater in the win, with goalkeeper Megan Holthaus making three saves for the win.

The Ponies now await their seeding and first-round opponent for the Section 4AA Tournament, slated to run Oct. 11-18.

Girls Tennis

The Stillwater girls tennis team opened the Section 4AA Tournament in triumphant manner as the top-seeded Ponies thumped No. 9 Woodbury, 6-1, at home on Wednesday. 

Individual statistics were not made available. Stillwater played No. 5 Hill-Murray on Friday morning in the sectional semifinals. Results were not yet reported.

Volleyball

The Stillwater volleyball team lost for the first time in nearly a month in a 3-1 setback at Mounds View, dropping the Ponies one game off the lead pace in the Suburban East.

Individual statistics were not made available. Stillwater takes a 9-7 overall record and a 6-1 conference mark into this weekend's appearance in the St. Michael-Albertville Tournament. The Ponies play Totino-Grace in the tourney opener at 4:15 p.m. Friday.

Scores and statistics from the Stillwater girls swim/dive team's Thursday meet versus Forest Lake were not reported.
