Stay Safe This Holiday - Tips on Fire Safety

The 4th of July holiday is filled with family picnics, fishing, swimming and, of course, fireworks.

Use the tips below to make sure you and your kids aren’t one of the 6,000 people injured by small fireworks (like sparklers) in the month surrounding July 4th.

Model good habits. Show your child how to respect fireworks and fire tools like lighters. Use legal fireworks in appropriate areas and put away unused fireworks and fire tools when you are finished.

Avoid accelerants. Don't use gasoline or other chemicals to start your barbeque or bonfires. These can be dangerous and give youth the wrong impression.

Supervise youth. Make sure youth stay a safe distance from fire and do not throw things into it that they shouldn't. Help them with campfire cooking and make sure all fireworks or fires are fully extinguished.
