Stillwater Author's Teen Novel 'Lies Beneath' Hits Bookshelves Today

Anne Greenwood Brown's debut young adult novel "Lies Beneath" hits the bookshelves today. The release of her highly anticipated book begs the question: Do you think mermaids will be the new vampires? Tell us what you think in the comments.

highly anticipated debut book "Lies Beneath" hits the bookshelves today.

Brown, a 1986 graduate of Stillwater High School, describes her young adult novel, "Lies Beneath," as a love story that encompasses mermaids, assassins and Lake Superior.

"On the eve of my debut (young adult) novel, Lies Beneath (Random House/Delacorte), launching itself into the world, I am, as my mother would say, 'completely and utterly discombobulated.' I don’t know what day of the week it is; I forgot to pick up my kids; I stored the milk in the pantry," Brown blogged on Writers Unboxed. "It’s like driving in my car, arriving at my destination, then looking around and realizing I have no memory of how I got there. All the scrapped drafts and bitter tears are gone, leaving behind a certain surprise at finding myself where I never dreamed I’d be. It is a humbling place, which begs not only the question of how did I get here, but when will the black-suited man show up at my door to tell me there’s been some mistake?"

Here's how Random House describes the Stillwater author's novel:

"Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.
