Stillwater Girls Lacrosse Team Headed To State, Baseball Advances in Sections

The Stillwater girls lacrosse team is headed to the state tournament for the first time in the team's four-year history.

Girls Lacrosse: Stillwater 18, Coon Rapids 11

The Stillwater girls lacrosse team is headed to the State Tournament.

The Ponies (14-2) gained their first state berth Thursday with an 18-11 win over Coon Rapids. Sammi Reiter scored 5 goals in the contest, while teammates Dana Almquist netted 4, Emma Wiessner scored 3, Hannah Dickman netted 2 and Emily Gould, Whitney Bartkey, Remi Larson and Emily Crea each scored 1. The Ponies goalie Marie Bonine made 8 saves on 19 shots on the way to the section championship.

The State Tournament is June 7-10 at Chanhassen High School. Seeds will be announced this week.

Baseball: Stillwater 7, Cretin-Durham Hall 3

After being swept by the Raiders in two regular-season meetings, the Ponies got off to an early lead and continued to take it to Cretin-Durham Hall Thursday in the 4AAA semifinals at Midway Stadium.

Stillwater ace Joe Zorn notched a complete-game win with six strikeouts, while only allowing one walk in seven innings. Just weeks after Zach Boyle threw nine no-hit innings against Stillwater, the Ponies pounded out six runs on 10 hits in four innings against the Raiders hurler.

The two-seeded Ponies will play fourth-seeded Mounds View tonight at 7 p.m. at Midway Stadium.

Softball: North St. Paul 9, Stillwater 4

The two-ranked Polars were too much for Stillwater, ending the Ponies season with a 9-4 loss in the section finals Thursday afternoon. The Ponies finished the regular season with a 17-7 record, ranked No. 10 in the state.

Boys Lacrosse: Blaine 6, Stillwater 3

The Stillwater boys lacrosse team ended May 26 with a 6-3 loss to Blaine in the section quarterfinals.

Sam Mathieu scored all three of the Ponies goals. Stillwater goalie Turner Uppgren made 12 saves.

The Ponies finished the season with an 8-6 record.
