The More-Tishans to Play the Withrow Ballroom April 14

The musical event will be a benefit for the Washington County Historical Society and their drive for a new facility to help preserve, collect and disseminate the history of Washington County and the state of Minnesota.

The Washington County Historical Society is excited to announce the Hall of Fame local band, the More-Tishans, will be playing at the Withrow Ballroom on Saturday, April 14.

The event will be a benefit for the and their and the state of Minnesota.

It was back in 1963 that four kids from Stillwater, Hugh Kraemer, Tom Cafferty, Chris Nelson and Roy [Pinky] Herschleb started a group they called “The More-Tishans,” tishans being Latin for music. Of the four members of this group only Pinky had a music background – he being a drummer in the High School band.

When the group began they were too young to drive so their first manager, Doc Lee, would bring the group to gigs in his station wagon towing a trailer behind. Lee was known as a keen competitor in the field of local dances and such. The group soon found itself traveling the entire state of Minnesota playing at one school dance to another.

In 1965 the group all graduated from and entered college. It was schoolwork during the week and Rock n’ Roll on the weekends. In 1966 a fellow high school classmate, Marc LeBoutillier wrote a song for the group called “[I’ve got] Nowhere to Run” which was recorded on a local label. That song received wide release and radio play and became one of the top songs in this market for the year.

In 1967, Tom Cafferty was drafted and left the group. He was replaced by Dick Schreier who was active in a group from Marshall, Minnesota. Later in the year, drummer Pinky Herschleb was stricken with a condition that made it difficult and painful to play the drums. He was replaced with Dan Monson.

The More-Tishans were one of the top local bands in the Twin Cities. On Aug. 23, 1968, the group played their last gig before a hometown crowd at the with all six members of the group there. The More-Tishans were inducted into Minnesota’s music hall of fame in 2008.

Although the original band never played at the Withrow Ballroom, they will now put their mark in the history books of the celebrated ballroom. The Withrow Ballroom began back in 1928 and is now considered the oldest operating ballroom in Minnesota. The owners of the Ballroom have donated the use of the facility to the Washington County Historical Society for the event.

The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the music will begin at 7 p.m. The More-Tishans will have some very special guests to make the event even more electric and the music that they played 40 years ago has never died and continues to echo through the area.

Tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. There will be a cash bar and all proceeds will go to the Washington County Historical Society.

For more information or to secure your advance tickets, call the Society at 651-439-5956 or visit www.wchsmn.org.
