Video: Stillwater Area Resident Places First in Minnesota State Fair Maple Syrup Contest
Mark Briol of West Lakeland placed first in the light amber maple syrup category at the Minnesota State Fair.
Mark Briol of West Lakeland took first place in the light amber maple syrup contest at the Minnesota State Fair. Briol also placed fourth in the medium amber maple syrup category.
The maple syrup is judged on density (25 percent), clarity (15 percent), color (10 percent) and overall flavor and quality (50 percent).
According to the rules of the Minnesota State Fair Maple Syrup Contest:

All Syrup entered in the contest must be produced and processed in Minnesota. No additives, coloring agents or preservative of any type or amount can be added to the syrup.
All syrup is opened for judging and no labels are allowed on the container. Syrup which has been judged in a previous Minnesota State Fair is ineligible for entry.

There are three maple syrup categories, light amber, medium amber and dark amber.
