Washington County License Center in Stillwater Adapting to Changes in Federal Law

Placement of the new Washington County License Center workstation within the testing site allows driver's license applicants who pass their driver's license test to immediately apply for their license in the same location.

The Washington County License Center at Valley Ridge Mall in Stillwater has adapted to changes in federal law, and may now continue to accept first-time drivers license applications and state-issued identification cards.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of State issued new rules, stating that service centers are not allowed to accept both first-time driver's license applications and passport applications. Previously, the Stillwater license center accepted both. Both the location and the workers who accept the two types of applications must be separated.

To comply with the new rules, Washington County worked with the Minnesota Department of Public Safety to place a workstation in the same location in which residents perform their written driver's license examinations, or apply for a license when moving to the state. The testing station is open Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 11:15 and from 12:30 to 3:45 p.m.
