HENNEPIN COUNTY, MN — Prosecutors charged an 18-year-old man Friday with shooting two people outside Eden Prairie High School's homecoming football game, saying surveillance video and cellphone location data tied him to the gunfire.
Adam Abdihakeem Adam faces two counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of second-degree riot while armed with a dangerous weapon, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.
A judge set his bail at $100,000.
Adam remains in the Hennepin County Jail and is scheduled to make his next court appearance Monday.
Eden Prairie police arrested Adam without incident Thursday afternoon at Highway 55 and Penn Avenue in Minneapolis.
Police said Adam lives in St. Louis Park.
The shooting happened around 8:40 p.m. Oct. 2 during Eden Prairie's homecoming game against Minnetonka.
According to the complaint, surveillance video shows a Sonata pulling into the parking lot shortly before the shooting along with another vehicle. About 10 people were fighting near the vehicles.
The Sonata's driver got out, climbed back in, got out again, fired at the two victims and then fled, the complaint says.
Investigators found one spent cartridge casing at the scene.
Police traced the Sonata to its registered owner but determined he was not at the shooting. Investigators then identified the owner's younger brother as Adam, according to the complaint.
Video showed only one person, the shooter, ever getting in or out of the car, and only through what appeared to be the driver's door, the complaint says.
Location data for the Sonata and Adam's cellphone showed the two traveling together before, during and after the shooting, according to the complaint. Investigators ruled out several other suspects whose phones did not follow the car.
Right after the shooting, Adam abandoned his phone and changed his phone number, the complaint says. When officers searched his home, they found clothing in his closet consistent with what the shooter was wearing on video.
One victim was shot through the leg and the other was shot in the foot.
Police have said the two, ages 18 and 17, are Somali males from St. Paul who are known to law enforcement. Neither attends Eden Prairie or Minnetonka schools. Police believe the shooting was targeted and gang-related.
Officials halted the game early in the fourth quarter with Eden Prairie leading 21-14 and evacuated the stadium.
The second-degree assault charges each carry a maximum sentence of seven years in prison. The riot charge carries a maximum of five years.
Police have said the investigation remains active and that more arrests or charges are possible.
