BSM Substitute Rescued from Quetico, Husband Dies

Elaine Barber was rescued Monday. Her husband's body was found Thursday.

A Benilde-St. Margaret’s substitute and Episcopal minister was rescued from Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario after her canoe capsized and her husband died, the Star Tribune reported Friday.

Ontario Provincial Police responded to a distress call from a satellite phone Sunday evening made near Basswood Lake, according to the Star Tribune. They couldn’t find the people in distress before nightfall, but found a woman Monday morning.

Elaine Barber told the Star Tribune, that she and her husband, 78-year-old Richard Barber, had been on the first part of a three-week trip when they tried to paddle through the Basswood River rapids.

The couple's canoe capsized while going through the rapids. Elaine Barber managed to swim to shore, but her husband could not. Searchers found Richard Barber’s body Thursday in Basswood Lake within Quetico Provincial Park.
