Dodge Crashes Into Squad On I-94: Trooper 'Lucky'

Trooper Sara Beth Evans was "lucky" in the crash, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

HENNEPIN COUNTY, MN — A Minnesota state trooper was able to walk away from a crash after her stopped squad was struck on Interstate 94 in Brooklyn Center last week. Trooper Sara Beth Evans was on northbound I-94 in the curve to westbound Interstate 694 just before 4 p.m. Aug. 23 when she saw a construction cone in the lane.

Evans activated the squad lights, slowed down, and was waiting for a safe moment to exit the vehicle when she was struck by a 1995 Dodge Status, according to authorities. An ambulance checked out one passenger on the scene but no one was transported. A baby from West Fargo, North Dakota was on board in the Dodge but he was not injured.

Trooper Evans was "lucky," the Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) said, because she walked away uninjured from this crash. Other law enforcement officials, including Minnesota Corporal Ted Foss, have lost their lives because vehicles do not move over for first responders. MSP said Foss was killed 17 years ago Thursday by a passing vehicle on Interstate 90 while on a traffic stop.
