The
Creative Exchange Lab, the Center for Architecture and Design (CEL) continues
its exhibition series “Context/Contrast Part 2: St. Louis” which studies the
progress of the city’s new architecture in the past two decades. Context/Contrast
Part 2 highlights the Mercantile Exchange Building (MX) in an exhibition
opening on Friday, March 28, 2014, in its grand center location at 3307
Washington Avenue, St. Louis from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.
The
Mercantile Exchange is an example of a downtown development project that has
acted as a stimulus for additional growth in the area by virtue of its
transformational architectural elements and multi-use concept. MX houses a
variety of enterprises including apartments, boutiques, a movie theatre and the
non-profit National Blues Museum.
Forum
Studio was contracted to complete architectural and landscape design services
for the Mercantile Exchange Building. The completed project revitalized the
Mercantile Exchange District by creating an urban-focused design to serve as
the new eastern anchor of the burgeoning downtown commercial and residential
neighborhood. Using sustainable design principles, the building strategy was
successful in retaining eighty percent of the existing structure.
