Northern Minnesota City Wins 'Best Midwestern Town' Contest

Grand Marais, a small city in northern Minnesota, has been chosen as the "Best Midwestern Town."

GRAND MARAIS, MN — A small northern Minnesota town has been chosen as the "Best Midwestern Town." If you don't know it, Grand Marais is located on the North Shore of Lake Superior and has a population of 1,351, per the 2010 Census.

Grand Marais took the number one spot in a contested hosted by USA Today to determine the best town in the Midwest. Here's how the website describes the northern Minnesota town:

Situated at the end of Minnesota's North Shore Scenic Drive, the town of Grand Marais charms with its art galleries, quirky restaurants, local shops and diverse lodging. While there's plenty to do in town (it's home to one of the nation's best art colonies), this harbor village also serves as a gateway to outdoor adventure in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Grand Marais wasn't the only Minnesota town to score high in the ranking. Lanesboro was slotted at No. 3, just behind Charlevoix, Michigan.
