Once Upon a Mattress,
written by Mary Rodgers, Marshall Barer, Jay Thompson, and Dean Fuller, is
a comedic retelling of the fairy tale classic, "The Princess and the
Pea." A bossy queen has rendered her husband speechless and her son
wifeless. Alas, no one can marry until the prince is wed, so the entire
kingdom roots for each potential princess as the queen puts her through a
grueling trial. Along comes Princess Fred, an aggressive "lily"
from the swamplands, and everyone, save the queen, prays shell be sensitive
enough to pass the royal pea test.
