Simon has been a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage. Two years ago, a video of Simon went viral when he asked in a floor speech, “How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around?”

In a Monday Minnesota Public Radio article, Simon defended the latest bill against charges that it would infringe on religious beliefs. The local legislator said the Minnesota bill has the strongest protections of any comparable bill in the country.

And on Tuesday, he tweeted, “I've not seen 1 example of a US legislator who has regretted vote for same-sex marriage, but I've seen many examples of opposite regret.”

The House will have a final floor vote on the same-sex marriage bill Thursday, the Star Tribune reported.
