Albertville Fire Department Seeking Volunteer Reserve Fire Fighters

The Albertville Fire Department asked the council to approve the addition of three reserve fire fighters at Wednesday night's council meeting.

"The last several years we've been losing on average two fire fighters a year due to job changes or moving," Albertville Fire Chief Tate Mills told the council Wednesday night.

Adding three reserve fire fighters would help the department because as paid on call fire fighters leave, Mills would have new fire fighters already trained to replace them.

Reserve fire fighters would not be paid though they would be covered under the fire departments' insurance policy. However once someone is a reserve fire fighter they would be ready for a paid on call spot once one opened up.

"It wouldn't be based on seniority but instead performance and attitude," Mills said.

The expected budget for this addition of three reserve fire fighters is $0 as the city already has the facilities and equipment. Training costs would be covered by the Fire Department which would have to be covered when hiring paid on call fire fighters as well.

Those interested can obtain an application from city hall or the Albertville website. Interviews are expected to take place in January.
