Chiropractic Tips For Restful Sleep

Helpful hints to help you get your rest before the big change of seasons :)!

A good night’s rest can make you feel like a new person. It can restore your energy, give you the mental stamina you need for a new day and gives your body the rest it needs after a long day of wear and tear.

What’s so frustrating for many adults is finding themselves tossing and turning when they are obviously tired but just can’t get comfortable in their own beds because of pain.

If you’re considering an appointment with your chiropractor because of neck pain or back pain it assuredly will be a good investment. In the meantime you should do a check of your bedtime routine and sleeping area to make sure you are adequately equipped for a comfortable night of sleep.

Some things to keep in mind are:

The age of your mattress. At about 10 years, a mattress has hit it’s maximum life expectancy. If your mattress is feeling lumpy, unsupportive or is just too soft, this could be the reason for your poor night’s rest. Your mattress should be firm and supportive.

Position. If you’re sleeping on your tummy, you may find that you’re waking with neck pain, back pain or headaches. It may come as a surprise that what may be your most comfortable position is one that places the most strain on your neck and back. For better positioning, try sleeping on your side or back. Your spine should be straight from top to bottom with little curvature.

Pillow. A pillow that is too soft won’t provide enough support for your head and neck. Too many pillows can force your neck upward in a craned position, leaving you with pain come morning. Finding the right pillow that isn’t too soft but offers enough support may take some trial and error but it’s well worth the effort for a comfortable night of sleep.

A good night of sleep can be just what you need to get some relief from back pain and headaches. Making a few changes can help make your night time a more restful time.

With all these tips in mind, if you feel like you need to be checked, swing into HealthSource or your local chiropractor and get your spine checked!  Have a great August STMA!
