Inspiration When You Need it Most - Part II
How to find inspiration when you need it most (Part II), by Maris Ehlers Photography
1. Collect random, inspirational imagery. I subscribe to photography magazines, as of course that is a great way for me to learn and be inspired about the topic on a regular basis. However, I also subscribe to publications from other genres as well: fashion, nature, sports, etc., and they all inspire me in various ways. I keep a binder with images that I tear out, and I flip through them for ideas from time to time. I am always surprised that I find new details and ideas almost every time that I do.
Another great way to collect inspirational imagery is on the internet, especially facebook and Pinterest. Pinterest, which is a virtual pinning board, is really an inspiration nirvana. You can search for nearly anything as well as create boards by any type of topic or theme. Just be sure to read the terms and conditions as they relate to copyrights. If you'd like to follow me on Pinterest, you can find my page here.
2. Go for a drive. Preferably to a place that looks different than where you live and work each day. Better yet, bring your camera and commit to taking ten pictures on your journey. You'll be surprised at what draws you in, and what you end up taking pictures of.

3. Check in and check out. Check in to your local library and check out from your smart phone, email and computer while you're there. Browse around and just go where your mind wanders. Pick up some books, browse through some magazines and just soak it up. This is one of my all time favorite things to do, although I rarely get to do it.
4. Create a color palette. Color palettes can give you all sorts of photographic ideas. Create a palette of 3 to 5 colors that you really like and think works well together, and then go take pictures of things you see that are one or more of those colors. This is a very fun thing to do, and can really get your mind thinking about things in a new way. I also like to use paint chips this way. I love looking at paint chips (not sure I've ever admitted this before - ha ha). Finding unique shades of colors can get my mind going in new directions.

5. Find inspirational quotes. Quotes are a great way to get inspired. Pinterest is a great source for these, too. Quotes can often give me an idea of something to photograph or create, and lately I've been adding quotes directly into my images, and the response has been great.
6. Just do it. The most important and best way to bring about inspired and innovative results is to take the first step. Pick up your camera and start taking pictures. Sit down at your computer and start typing out the story. Create your list of ideas and share them with one person for feedback and possibly more ideas.
The list is really endless, and so is your potential.
