National Honor Society Inductees Join the Organization’s Ranks at Performing Arts Center

The ceremony, held Wednesday, increased the ranks of the school's honor students.

Wednesday, 32 St. Michael-Albertville sophomores and juniors joined the ranks of an elite group of students recognized through the National Honor Society for their dedication to high levels of achievement. The organization bills itself as the nation’s premier organization for recognizing outstanding students in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character and service.

Current NHS officers presided over this evening’s program, with high school principal Dale Carlson giving the address.

For these students, their induction to National Honor Society is only the beginning rather than a mere accolade.

“We are specifically a service-oriented organization,” said Bob Zahler, the school’s NHS leader. “Once inducted, the students are making a commitment to one to two years of service (depending on which year they become inducted) back to the school and community.”

Some of the service project NHS students can be found doing throughout the year include their annual “Trick or Can” Halloween food drive for the Hanover Food Shelf, serving a meal and playing bingo with seniors at the Ridgedrive Apartment complex, holding Penny Wars to raise funds for St. Jude’s cancer research hospital and organizing the school’s two largest dances each year, where all proceeds are either donated to a scholarship fund or to a charity of the students’ choice.
