Ney Park to Host Master Naturalist Volunteer Program Aug. 10-15

The Wright County Parks & Recreation Department will serve as host this summer for the annual Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer Program, which is run by the University of Minnesota Extension Office.

Registration is currently open and the class size is limited to 16 people, so spots are expected fill quickly for the program. The course runs from Monday, Aug. 10 through Saturday, Aug. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. For the eighth consecutive year, the course will be conducted at Robert Ney Memorial Park Reserve in Maple Lake Township.

Ney Park will serve as the base for learning about the Big Woods and Big Rivers, exploring the plants, animals, history, geology, hydrology and ecology of Minnesota’s deciduous forests and waterways.

Those who complete the six-day course will earn certification as a Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer. MNV’s remain active by volunteering 40 hours a year after being certified.

The schedule includes four short field trips in addition to a daylong outing in Wright County parks, Lake Maria State Park and the confluence of the Clearwater and Mississippi Rivers.

The cost for the course is $295 and includes course manuals and supplies. For those who have difficulty affording the fee for the course, scholarships are available.
