Parent Talk: Back to School Means Back to Bed for St. Michael Kids

Getting enough sleep is key to your child's success at school. Do your kids get it?

It’s that time of the year again. Open houses and meet the teacher nights galore. Next week let’s hope all of our kids are settled back into their new school routines and ready to start the year out right.

Once all the shopping is done, the teachers are met and the anticipation is hanging in the air, how do you and your kids prepare for back to school?

One thing that always comes to my mind after a wacky summer schedule is bedtime.

Did you know kids need between 10-11 hours of sleep a night? should have at least eight to nine hours according to Dr. Catherine Pham of the St. Michael Allina Clinic. She also suggests “shifting your children’s sleep schedule from the lazy days of summer to the school schedule a week or more before school starts so they are already in the routine when classes start.” [With permission. We tried that Tuesday night. Unsuccessfully. After a summer of late nights, lazy mornings, sleepovers and off schedules, our two middle schoolers had a really hard time adjusting to an earlier bedtime. Something I’m glad we have a few more days to work on.
