Meet the Newest Face of St. Michael City Council

One of Nadine Schoen's most important initiatives is to maintain current St. Michael businesses and provide the economic environment to cultivate others.

Nadine Schoen is not a new face to the city of St. Michael.

Though she is originally from Maple Lake, Nadine has been living in St. Michael for almost 20 years with her husband, Pat, a life-long resident. She opened her salon, Tangles (formerly known as Nadine’s) in 1989, while her husband owns St. Michael’s Schoen Electric.

Apart from their professional lives as business owners, the Schoens stay busy in St. Michael with their three children and, now, Nadine’s newest role on the city council.

St. Michael Patch caught up with Nadine in an effort to formally introduce her to the St. Michael community.

St. Michael Patch: So why run for city council?

Nadine Schoen: I was previously involved with the Planning and Zoning Commission and EDA (Economic Development) and just felt as though I needed to take the next step and get more involved.

St. Michael Patch: How did your family feel about you running for a seat on the city council?

Schoen: They were super supportive. My kids were out handing out literature with me and my mom came from Maple Lake on the weekends to help out. They were all really excited and supportive.

St. Michael Patch: And your husband? What did he say?

Schoen: (Laughing) He wasn’t surprised. I’ve always been super motivated and just like to get things done.

St. Michael Patch: What are some things you’d like to work on during your four years on council?

Schoen: I’d really like to be a voice for the people and business owners in St. Michael. I think in the past some people didn’t know who they could reach out to and I want residents to feel comfortable to come talk to me. I want to be available and make connections.

We live in a great community and I’d really like it to continue to prosper while also keeping our hometown values.

St. Michael Patch: Is there one thing you’d really like to accomplish during your time in office?

Schoen: Economic development is a big one for me. Not only do I want to attract and see more new businesses in St. Michael but I want to support and keep the businesses we already have. I fully support “Shop St. Michael” and want to keep our businesses here.

St. Michael Patch: It’s been almost two full months since you began on the city council. How is it going so far?

Schoen: The city staff has been so supportive in helping me get acclimated and answering my questions. So far so good.

St. Michael Patch: After your time as a council member, do you have any other future political aspirations?

Schoen: (Laughing) Let’s just take things one step at a time.
