Sports Roundup: Knights Boys, Girls Soccer Teams Claim Tourney Titles
St. Michael-Albertville defeats host Orono in back-to-back championship games on Wednesday.
Tuesday night was a triumphant one for both the St. Michael-Albertville girls and boys soccer teams as the Knights swept the Orono Tournament with back-to-back championship victories over their hosts.
Girls Soccer
Propelled to victory by goals from Maddie Barr, Maddi Young and Paige Voigt, the STMA girls soccer team defeated Orono, ranked second in Class A, to claim their first title hardware of the year.

The Knights beat Waconia's Holy Family Catholic, 2-1, on Tuesday in the tourney's first round to advance to the finals.
STMA improved to 3-1 on the year with their third-straight victory after falling to East Ridge in the first game of the Irondale Tournament to open the autumn.

The squad is now off until Friday, Sept. 9, when they play at home for the first time this year at 7 p.m. against Moorhead.
Boys Soccer
Justin McLain scored twice, with Ben Bridell tallying one goal, as the STMA boys soccer team defeated fifth-ranked Orono, 3-2, in overtime to claim their tourney title.
The Knights had defeated Holy Family Catholic, 1-0, in the semifinals on Tuesday to claim their spot in the championship round. Bridell got the game winner in this one with a great header goal
STMA improved to 4-1 with the triumph and is now off until Saturday, Sept. 10 when Elk River pays a visit for a 1 p.m. game.
This is the first ever tournament win in the program’s history, head coach Derek Dewey said.
Volleyball
The STMA volleyball team won its second game of the season in a three-game sweep of visiting Sauk Rapids-Rice (25-15, 25-20, 25-19) on Tuesday.
The Knights opened the season with a 3-2 win over Moorhead last weekend.
Individual statistics were not available. The Knights play on the road for the first time this season with a game at East Ridge in Woodbury at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Girls Tennis
The STMA girls tennis team dropped to 5-2 on the season with a 4-3 loss to Totino-Grace on Wednesday.
Individual statistics were not available. The Knights next host Becker at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
