St. Michael-Albertville Girls' Swim Team Picks up First Win

Picking up where they left off last season, the Knights girls' swim team rolled to a season-opening victory at Winona.

With just one loss on its dual meet record last year, the St. Michael-Albertville girls' swimming program put a stamp on its best season ever, claiming a share of the Mississippi 8 Conference championship and nearly earning a trip to the State AA Meet in its first season at that level.

Now, it's time for the encore.

St. Michael-Albertville rolled to a dual meet victory in Winona last Friday, riding the wake of state meet qualifier Kasey Roberts, senior Katie Schmitz and freshman Carly Roberts to a 107-77 final.

The varsity "performed well for such an early meet in the season," said head coach Tom Guillou, who's squad usually waits to dive in until September. "We included two tough days of workouts, including some bluff climbs. I was pleased with the effort and results from the entire team."

The Roberts sisters will team together on some relays this season, including the 200-yard medley relay. That's going to create some troubles for other squads, as the two have been blazing trails with the Sea Devils swim club in St. Michael.

Friday, they rolled to a sub-2-minute time in the relay, beating Winona by more than two full seconds.

Carly also picked up wins in the 100 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Kasey had wins in the 100 fly and 200 IM.

The Knights will swim at Melrose Area next Thursday in non-conference action. The meet begins at 6 p.m.

St. Michael-Albertville's first home meet will be a Mississippi 8 dual vs. Cambridge-isanti. The Knights and Bluejackets will hit the water at 6 p.m. at .
