The age to legally drive a snowmobile in Minnesota is 12 years old and anyone ages 12 to 18 must complete online testing as well as one field day class. Anyone over the age of 18 can complete the requirements completely online. Anyone born after Dec. 31, 1976 is required to have a snowmobile safety certificate to operate a snowmobile in Minnesota and is required to have proof whenever driving a snowmobile – either the certificate itself or a snowmobile endorsement on a driver’s license or I.D. card.
Matt Treichler, chief deputy for the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, said the county hosts the required field day class once or twice a year due to the lack of available alternative courses elsewhere in the county.

“As far as Wright County goes, our Field Day is one of the main places to take the course,” Treichler said. “It all depends on the demand there is at any given time as to how often we do them. We usually do one or two a year and that’s why we scheduled the Field Day for Feb. 9. Because we only have just one or two a year, the turnout is pretty good.”
A participant must be a minimum of 11 years old the day of the course. The certificate doesn’t become effective until the boy or girl turns 12 years of age
Pre-registration is required and is being done at Trueman Welters Inc., 1600 Hwy. 55 E., Buffalo. The registration fee is $5 and those too young to have a standard driver’s license must provide a birth certificate as proof of identity.
