A NEW Blog: About Town Homes and Associations

Comments about the shared problems and issues of living in a Townhome Association in the Woodbury area.

Greetings. I am a long term Woodbury resident, and the current chair of our townhome association.

I had some involvement with city government at one point, and one thing I learned there is that there is a lot to learn there! It is the same with every new aspect of life. We have owned a single-family home in Woodbury since 1976.

About 7 years ago, we sold that place and bought one of these townhomes.  It was a good financial deal, and we figured we would be relieved of all of that maintenance stuff - grass and snow and the like.

Well, we still think it is a good idea, but now we have another small set of concerns. We belong to this larger enterprise now, our Townhome Association, and it has rules and budgets and problems, etc. Guess what — they expect us all to take a part in this enterprise.

We have had small problems — those pesky Japanese beatles are eating our trees, and now their grubs are chewing up our turf.  And we have had larger problems — we had melting siding on many of our homes — what's with that? We also had a lot of trouble initially just collecting our monthly fees. At one point, we were not able to collect enough fees to pay the bills. We actually borrowed some funds to keep us in operation — it was either that or I was going to be out there cutting the grass pretty soon!

Fortunately, we have been able to resolve most of the problems to this point. But I am sure the future holds other challenges that we have not encountered.

So, I was thinking — if you have similar problems, and similar solutions, it would be very helpful if all of us in this general area could share our experiences, issues, and solutions with townhome associations.

On some irregular basis, I will post a query or an issue here for any one that shares that common interest. Feel free to suggest topics or ask questions. At this point, we have some 7 years of experience in this — and we are still in business!

Remember, I'm pulling for ya, we're all in this together. (Red Green)
