Days Away From My First 5K

Although she never considered herself a runner, Heather Hampton is excited to be running in her first 5K race on Sunday.

On Sunday I will be running my first 5K in Bloomington (Women's Running Magazine 5K).

To say that I am excited and nervous is a little bit of an understatement.

Although a 5K may not be a big deal for some people, I find this first race IS a big deal to me. I have also been a physically fit person that enjoys a varied workout of walking, tennis, mountain biking, rollerblading, and strength training. Notice, running or jogging did not make that list!

I have just never really enjoyed running or jogging for fitness.

So, how do I find myself just days away from my first race and so excited about this new challenge?

Baby Boot Camp has a 5K training program based on interval training. I found a couple friends that were willing to train along with me, picked a race date at least 8 weeks out, and threw caution to the wind. Interval training is the key for those people who don’t consider themselves runners or even if you do. This method of training is proven to help prevent injury and helps you to gradually increase your jogging or running intervals.

It has been wonderful training with other women that will also be completing their first 5K race along with me. It has been so rewarding to see our jogging intervals increase every week and to know that we are all getting stronger. I can’t wait to see our race times on Sunday!

I must have caught the “racing bug” because I have already signed up for the Twin Cities 5K in the beginning of October.
