Brief: Woodbury Maintenance Projects Begin Sept. 12

The city will get started on the annual street sweeping next Monday, with hydrant flushing set to begin Sept. 19.

The city's Public Works Department is set to begin fall maintenance activities in Woodbury on Monday, Sept. 12.

Street sweeping will begin that day and continue for approximately five working days between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., weather permitting.

The city is asking people to remove items such as portable basketball hoops from roads for the street sweepers.

Street sweeping is done to remove garbage, accumulated dirt and sand, and other material before it is washed into the storm sewer, according to a release from the city. Removing the material while it is still on the street is more efficient than removing it from storm water ponds and helps protect water quality in city lakes and wetlands.

If the street sweeping goes as scheduled, hydrant flushing will begin the week of Sept. 19.

Dead-end water lines, such as those in cul-de-sacs, will be flushed to ensure the hydrants are operating properly. The project is expected to take about four weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Though flushing may occasionally discolor the water for a few minutes, it is safe to drink, according to the release. Residents may want to check for signs of discoloration before using the water to wash clothes, particularly white clothes.
