Man Sentenced For 2010 DWI Crash In Woodbury

Mahtomedi resident Edward Jaworski receives 51-month sentence after August 2010 crash that left two people in critical condition.

A Mahtomedi man on Monday was sentenced to 51 months in prison stemming from an August 2010 incident in which he sparked a multiple vehicle crash during a police chase in Woodbury that reached speeds of 80 mph.

Edward Jaworski, 38, pleaded guilty to three counts of criminal vehicular operation, one count of gross misdemeanor DWI and one count of driving after cancellation, according to a release from Washington County.

Washington County District Court Judge Susan Miles sentenced Jaworski, the driver in the Aug. 22, 2010, incident in which he fled police and crashed into vehicles near the intersection of Woodbury Drive and Valley Creek Road.

A now-18-year-old female in one of the cars Jaworski crashed into continued to receive follow-up medical treatment for her injuries, including neurological and cognitive problems, according to the criminal complaint.

Another passenger’s “upper and lower jaws were dislocated from his face, his upper teeth were hanging by his cheek flesh, blood was spurting from his mouth area and he was choking on his own blood,” according to the complaint.

Photographs from the scene indicate Jaworski did not attempt to stop before hitting the other vehicles—there were no skid marks on the road, according to the complaint.

Blood test results indicated Jaworski’s blood-alcohol concentration was .24. The legal limit is .08.

Jaworski, who was also injured in the crash, has four previous alcohol-related driver's license revocations.

“Clearly, the criminal justice system is incapable of remedying the enormous damage inflicted upon the victims of this horrendous incident,” Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said in a statement. “We wish we were able to provide that remedy, that solace, but the criminal justice system simply cannot. Our hearts go out to the victims in this case and we hope that with the conclusion of this prosecution, their emotional healing can begin.”

Woodbury investigators learned that on the night of the incident, Jaworski had been at Acapulco Restaurante before the crash and was served five margaritas between 3:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. He left when staff refused to serve him further, according to the complaint.

According to the release from Washington County, Jaworski’s license was revoked on April 19, 2001, and Aug. 1, 2010. He has a pending gross misdemeanor DWI from June 23, 2010, and his driving privileges have been cancelled as inimical to public safety since Aug. 1, 2010. Charges of first degree DWI were filed against Jaworski in Ramsey County pursuant to an arrest on Feb. 15. He is awaiting future court appearances.
