Woodbury Community Theatre to perform “Les Misérables”
“Les Misérables” presented by Merrill Community Arts Center and Woodbury Community Theatre, will open on Friday, June 19 and run through Sunday, June 28. Les Misérables, the world’s longest running musical, is a timeless story of redemption, hope, and love that’s enthralled audiences across the globe. Set in early 19th century France, the musical tells the story of Jean Valjean, a convict who breaks parole in order to start a new life for himself. He avoids recapture by the unflinching Inspector Javert numerous times, eventually emerging in Paris as a group of students plot a revolution in the streets. Based on the 1862 novel by Victor Hugo, the show first premiered in France in 1980 before debuting on Broadway in 1987 and staying for 16 years and 6,680 performances. The original production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Book. The book is by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg, with music by Schönberg and lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer.
